"This is a Story" at Westside CultureFest
IAC is thrilled to be returning to the Westside CultureFest with excerpts from our latest work-in-process.“This is a Story” is an experimental opera about the multiverse and the worlds/beings that populate it. The opera unfolds in a modular series of linked vignettes, each set in a different world with its own distinct sound styles, colors, materials and textures, movement languages, etc. Music, spoken and sung text, lights, and dance form the starship by which we navigate these worlds and encounter other bodies.
Join us on August 15 for an early, intimate look at some of the worlds we’re building. Free and open to the public! Studio 5400 at the festival.

Treatise at UMOCA
Interdisciplinary Arts Collective performs an intermedial realization of Cornelius Cardew's 1967 composition Treatise, featuring electro-acoustic music, dance, poetry, and projections.
A seminal work in the development of notational practices in Western experimental music history, Treatise is a graphic musical score that consists entirely of lines, curves, symbols, and white space across 193 pages. Musicians are asked to interpret these graphics into sound.
IAC's performance of Treatise expands the interpretive possibilities of Cardew's musical score into an interdisciplinary performance. Both musicians and dancers translate the notation into sound and movement, accompanied by spoken poetry and projections of the score for the audience to read in real-time alongside the performers. Together, the musicians, dancers, and poets explore what is at stake as a community when we engage with collective decision-making, individual agency, and how sound, bodies, and language can shape and challenge perceptions of reality.
Staged as part of a curatorial double-bill with Sol LeWitt’s Wall Drawing No. 309, on loan to UMOCA from the National Gallery of Art. Join us upstairs at 6:00pm for a talk on the LeWitt led by a UMOCA curator. IAC’s performance begins downstairs at 6:30pm and lasts until 8:30pm. Visitors are welcome to come and go as they please and to explore the UMOCA exhibitions during the performance.
This event is free and open to the public, but advance registration is recommended.

And you ghosts rise blue is an experimental pasticcio opera in three acts. Join us in the Masonic Temple for an evening of movement, sound, and light as we open a rift in the space-time continuum and call in voices past and future, real and unreal. The voices – sounding alongside a collaborative collective of dancers, musicians, poets, actors, and visual artists – form a ghostly chorus with whom we sing of the ephemeral, the infinite, and the im/possible.

The Blocks Arts District’s Co-Create initiative is collaborating with Yardwork Presents for Little Stages - the debut of new modular 4’×4’ micro-stages tucked between 100 S & 200 S where dancers, musicians, and street performers will bring downtown to life—one small stage at a time. And we’ll be there!
Interdisciplinary Arts Collective is alchemizing the Little Stages into little worlds. Over the course of a 45-minute performance, audience members can explore the new galaxy dotted across Main Street as constellations of artists use music, movement, and poetry to shape and embody landscapes of sand, metal, growing vines, toxic sludge, and scraps of paper.
