The Sessions is a new series of community arts programming in Salt Lake City, organized and facilitated by Interdisciplinary Arts Collective.
The series consists of three offerings: Listening Sessions, Moving Sessions, and Dreaming Sessions. They are all held on a regular repeating basis every month, free and open to the public for drop-in participation. Everyone is welcome, no arts experience necessary!
Listening Sessions: a space to listen to music together. Each week we’ll gather on Wednesday night and press play – new music, beloved classics, sounds that stretch the definition of music, every week will be different. You need nothing more than ears, a sense of curiosity, and a willingness to listen boldly.
Moving Sessions: a space to explore motion and dance. Moving Sessions are open-level dance classes hosted on the first and third Tuesday of each month. Our focus is not on codified shapes and styles, as in a traditional dance technique class, but instead on the connection between body and mind. Using improvisation-based prompts, individuals are encouraged to let thought and imagination guide their bodies through new and unexpected movement pathways. We all have bodies that move and think and dance – Moving Sessions are meant as an open, playful, imaginative practice for deepening your relationship with your body and how it moves.
Dreaming Sessions: a space to imagine and converse. Dreaming Sessions are structured around a community-oriented conversation practice called Social Dreaming, developed by sociologist Gordon Lawrence. We gather together once a month on the new moon to talk, release our dreams into the collective (un)consciousness, and allow new ways of thinking and communicating to emerge.
It is our hope that The Sessions function as a community laboratory – an accessible, inviting, curious space for experimentation, communication, and play. The Sessions are designed to be low-barrier and welcoming, suited to artists, anti-artists and non-artists alike. Come as you are, come as you are able, come as you wish. Each of the Sessions aims to offer both a rich, enjoyable arts experience and a capacity-building opportunity to personally and socially explore how we listen, how we live and dance inside our bodies, and how we dream and imagine.
